Penny Dreadfuls were the ancestors of tabloïds which are still very popular in the United Kingdom.
They were newspapers telling horrific stories to entertain people. They were sold on the streets by paperboys for 1 penny.
They were in general a mixture of real stories, fantastic tales and morbid fake news.
